The BMW Art Car by Frank Stella, 1976

At the early age of 14, FrankStella,who

was born inMalden,Massachusetts in 1936,

began studying art at the PhillipsAcademy in

Andover,USA.

After studyinghistoryatPrincetonUniversity,

USA,he setupa studio inNewYork. Itwas then

that the “TransitionalPaintings”and “Black

Paintings

”emerged.At

theageof 23,heheldhis

ownexhibition in theMuseumofModernArt in

NewYork.During the sixtieshis “post-abstract”

popartcolourpaintings took theirplace inart

history. From 1960 to 1980Stellaexhibitedhis

workallover theworld.

He laterdevotedmostofhis time to relief

paintings.

Whendesigning theBMW 3.0CSL,Stella

disassociatedhimself fromhis random style to

seek inspiration from the technical fascination

of the racingcoupé.Hecreatedablackand

white squaregrid, itsprecision reminiscent

ofoversizedgraphpaper.Thisgraphpaper

pattern ranacross theentirebodywork, formally

capturingandaccuratelydescribingevery

curveandevery indentation.Thedesignof the

ArtCarmarked the turningpoint into three-

dimensionality.

In 1976,Stella’scoupé tookpart in the

24-hour raceat LeMans–aparticularly

exceptionalpremiere for theworkof suchan

ardentmotor racingenthusiast.Unfortunately,

however,asa resultof technicalproblems,

thecardidnotachieveaplacing,aswasalso

thecase in the 500km raceatDijonon 5th

September 1976.
